This World Environment Day, join #GenerationRestoration.

In the lead up to World Environment Day, we're featuring updates from United Nations System, from partners and from others helping to call attention to the fact that the future of humanity depends on action now.

“Our lonely planet’s cryin’ out. What ya gonna do?” A song for our times

Ahead of World Environment Day on June 5, people across the globe have been getting active and harnessing their unique talents to reimagine our relationship with nature and restore our degraded planet.

Take the Storybook Farmers, who released a new song -- What’s Goin’ Down -- to draw attention to the climate emergency and its impact on the planet, nature and people. The song was released on Earth Day, April 22.

Musician and fervent environmentalist Tom Bleck penned the song during lockdown to express his frustration with the lack of progress in tackling the climate emergency. His son, Zander, also features on vocals.

World Environment Day marks the official start of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, a 10-year push to revive the natural world by preventing, halting and reversing the degradation of ecosystems worldwide. Everyone must play a part because we have no time to lose. We can grow trees, green our cities, rewild our gardens, change our diets and clean up rivers and coasts.

If you too want your voice to be heard, join #GenerationRestoration here.

Connect4Climate works to raise awareness about climate change and build coalitions for action. Many of the most striking recent successes in climate activism have been won by passionate youth, and Connect4Climate is committed to amplifying the voices of younger generations as the climate action movement intensifies.

Connect4Climate is a global partnership programme launched by the World Bank Group and the Italian Ministry for Ecological Transition (MITE), together with the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Restoring Precious Ecosystems in California

Throughout California, individuals, businesses and communities are working together to restore, reimagine and recreate degraded ecosystems from urban green spaces to agricultural lands.

Last October, the state committed to a groundbreaking 30x30 Executive Order to protect 30 per cent of California’s lands and waters by 2030. Indigenous leadership is at the heart of this movement to help fragile natural systems thrive and ensure the survival of all species.

Ahead of World Environment Day on June 5, and the official launch of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, UNEP’s North America Office and the government of California created a compelling video to showcase important restoration initiatives taking place in the state and show how local solutions can have a big global impact.

Check out the video and the full story of restoration work in the state here.

A new report produced by the UN Secretariats of the Basel, Minamata, Rotterdam, & Stockholm conventions maps the interlinkages between hazardous chemicals, wastes and climate change, which combine to impact efforts to conserve and restore nature.

Launched to coincide with World Environment Day on June 5, the report -- Chemicals, Wastes and Climate Change: Interlinkages and Potential for Coordinated Action -- presents a comprehensive technical review of the literature on climate change and hazardous chemicals management, towards identifying a set of opportunities for simultaneously addressing these two critical elements of the broader sustainability challenge.

WHO joins the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration on World Environment Day

WED SM card

The World Health Organization has joined the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, as a collaborating agency, along with UNEP, the Food and Agriculture Organization and a large number of partners.

Ecosystem restoration can significantly contribute to supporting health and well-being by helping to regulate infectious diseases, supporting food and nutrition security, and contributing to climate mitigation and adaptation. Restoration also reduces the risk of disasters, while supporting livelihoods and healthy societies.

Last year, WHO launched a Manifesto for a Healthy and Green Recovery from COVID-19, outlining six prescriptions essential to a healthier, greener and more equitable future. The first of these prescriptions recognizes that nature needs to be protected and preserved as the source of human health.

The UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration is part of a series of collaborative efforts led by WHO that seek to strengthen cross-sectoral collaboration and engagement at the human, animal, plant and ecosystem interface, also known as One Health.

Read more about One Health here.

WHO will host an online #GenerationRestoration event in July 2021, in collaboration with key partners and stakeholders. The event will provide insights into how to mainstream health in Nature-based Solutions, with a focus on the numerous co-benefits ecosystem restoration can provide in our journey toward a healthier, more sustainable future for all.
