Stockholm industrial zone goes green

The Stockholm Royal Seaport , an industrial area in the east of the city, has been undergoing a green revolution.

Over 12,000 new homes and 35,000 workplaces have replaced what was, until 2011, a decrepit industrial site. The housing is sustainable and the soil in the area has been treated to remove heavy chemicals and hazardous chemicals.

Ahead of World Environment Day 2022, the Financial Times has released an interactive game entitled ‘Can you reach net zero by 2050.’ Players of the game are presented with multiple-choice questions involving the climate crisis and how to battle it.  The game is complicated by the fact that players only have a certain number of points to spend and have to choose which options they take.

The game is based on real science and uses simulation and emissions modelling developed by the International Energy Agency (IEA). Players can choose to be one of four characters, from a teen activist to a politician when they play the game.

You can play the game here.

Religious leaders and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) have come together ahead of World Environment Day 2022 to sign a landmark appeal on climate-responsible finance.

The Climate-Responsible Finance – A moral imperative and responsibility to all children and the living world appeal has been signed by the World Council of Churches (WCC), UNEP, the Muslim Council of Elders and the New York Board of Rabbis.

The appeal ensures that these organisations will only engage with financial institutions that are aligned with the Paris Agreement objective of limiting global warming to 1.5° C. The appeal also calls on financial service providers to require oil and gas companies to stop all new development or expansion projects.

Read the full text here. A webinar will provide capacity building around the appeal on 20 May at 15:00 CEST. Register here.
