An article entitled “The biodiversity crisis is a development crisis” penned by Inger Andersen, UNEP Executive Director, was published today in Spanish language in top newspapers in seven countries in Latin America.

Some have called the biodiversity loss a “silent crisis”. But make no mistake, biodiversity loss is devastating and with consequences as catastrophic as climate change. The biodiversity crisis is a development crisis, writes Andersen.

The biodiversity crisis has been unfolding for decades, as we, humans, have encroached into the natural world, fragmenting ecosystems and creating conditions for the faster spread of viruses between animal and human populations.

The COVID-19 pandemic, the greatest challenge humanity has faced since World War II, represents an unprecedented wake-up call: we need to recommit to the sustainable development goals and redraw our development model with nature firmly in mind.

Screening of Sharkwater Extinction

Sharkwater Extinction

What: The film Sharkwater Extinction follows filmmaker Rob Stewart as he exposes the massive illegal shark fin industry and the political corruption behind it. With a focus on sharks, it highlights biodiversity loss and its drivers including illegal wildlife trade and bycatch. It discusses the impacts of removing an apex predator from our interconnected web of life and raises public awareness on individual consumption as a driving force of biodiversity loss. A panel of international experts will discuss the loss of biodiversity illustrated in the film, exploring the drivers, such as illegal wildlife trade. The panel will also exchange their views on where solutions may lie and share what they are doing to halt biodiversity loss.

Speakers:

  • Sandy Campbell, Producer of Sharkwater Extinction
  • Susan Gardner, Director of Ecosystems Division, UNEP
  • Jessica Battle, Senior Expert Global Policy and Governance and Lead Deep Seabed Mining Initiative at WWF
