Ahead of World Environment Day 2022, a new tool has been developed by the Minderoo Foundation to measure plastic pollution.
The Global Plastic Watch tool combines advanced satellite data technology with machine learning and has identified thousands of waste sites across 25 countries.
The tool can determine the size and scale of land-based plastic waste sites, a major factor in fuelling the growing problem of plastic pollution in the world’s rivers and oceans. The tool will help authorities better manage plastic leakage into the marine environment.

The two-day international meeting concluded on 4 June with a statement issued by co-hosts Sweden and Kenya, drawn from Member States and stakeholders.

Ahead of World Environment Day 2022, held on 5 June, some of Tanzania’s biggest artists have released a song calling for ecosystem restoration.
Named Kijanisha, Swahili for “to make green,” the song is a rallying cry for ecosystem restoration and environmental change.
The artists featured on the song include John Makini, Frida Amani, Christina Shusho and Ben Pol, between them have an audience of over 11 million people. The lyrics not only draw attention to World Environment Day but also the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem.

The film, released globally by The SEA Circular Project, part of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), highlights the social implications of plastic pollution in the Asian context.
